Chapter 23
Just as Russ and Grayson promised her, Anna found another door farther down the hallway past the room with the weapons. This door was smaller and wasnât made of wood. It reminded her of something she would find on a submarine with steel bolts lining the outer edge and a circular handle in the middle. There was a keypad, which had been rendered useless years ago as several buttons were missing with age. Another indication that the keypad wasnât needed was that the door sat ajar.
She pushed it open, wondering what had gotten Russ and Grayson into such a state of panic about this final room. What could be so important after finding a huge room filled with weapons?
The candlelight made its way into this room, and again there were more crates, but these were sophisticated, cleaner looking. They were much smaller rectangular boxes with strips of wood through the middle for extra support. Curiosity overwhelmed her, and she had to see what was inside right away. What could be so heavy that these smaller boxes needed such an expertly-crafted box? Lucky for her, someone had already opened a few of them on her left.
She moved that way slowly, lowering the candle until the contents were easily visible.
Then everything Russ said about taking some with them became apparent.
This massive room, filled with dozens of cratesâprobably hundreds, but her candle couldnât penetrate the room too deepâheld a fortune.
In each box were ten gold bars.
The years had been hard on the building and the contents held within, but the gold hadnât decayed in any way. It simply had a thick layer of dust on it.
This was a treasure beyond imagination. She seemed to recall that one bar of gold was worth over half a million dollars, perhaps more. So, that meant one box of ten bars would be worth millions, and there were dozens and dozens of boxes in here.
But that wasnât possible. How were they all here, and where did it all come from? There was no way the military would abandon this property and leave such a fortune behind unattended.
She grabbed one of the gold bars and attempted to lift it.
âEach one weighs slightly north of twenty-five pounds,â Grayson said softly.
Anna dropped it back in the box. âHow the hell am I expected to carry one of these things out of here?â
âYouâre the only one with a carry-on bag.â Grayson kept his voice down like they were in a vault of some kind, and he didnât want to alert anyone to their presence. âI forget where I left my bag, or maybe itâs by the cabin.â He glanced down at the gold, then back at Anna, his eyes alive with greed. âBesides, there was nothing in my bag but bathroom stuff like toothpaste and deodorant. So, we figure your straps will carry the weight of two of these bad boys at least, and both of us are prepared to carry one each up to your bag. Then we leave and tell the world what we found.
